Thoughts on Summer
Summer is a time to enjoy.

Summer in Seattle begins slowly- the first day that the sun shines usually comes around in April, and everyone flocks to the nearest beach to soak up as much of the (somewhat) warm rays as they can. Slowly, it warms up, and we collectively thaw out, coming out from our wintertime hibernations, the sun no longer setting at 4pm!! This summer, fortunately, has not been too hot, or too smoky, unlike some past summers. We have been lucky to receive such a nice summer this year. As summer stretches on, I measure the time by the seasonal fruits that come- first we have the apricots and the first crop of peaches, which are usually not great, and then we get into peach season in earnest. I love peaches. With the peaches come blackberries- all over, waiting to be picked, for free! Getting scratched all over is worth it to get the plump, warm, sun-ripened berries that taste like summer.
This summer, like most summers, I’ve been fortunate to be able to travel to Montana and Wyoming. I have stopped in Butte and picked up books on the insane history of Butte and the infighting of the copper magnates from back in the day, stopped in Casper and picked up a selection of historical romance, and stopped in Billings for some books about Montana and the Native Americans who’s lands the states of present day Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota sit on, stopped in Missoula for lunch and the views. I’ve found a lot of interesting coffee shops, rivers, new roads, and found enjoyment in sitting outside and letting the wind blow me as it may- the wind always a constant in Wyoming. I’ve enjoyed the giant squalls that come through and dump water in Montana, the lightning and thunder that accompany them, and the thick, electric air that comes along with them.
This summer has been difficult due to the many losses I’ve suffered this year of those that are closest to me. It’s important to enjoy life to the fullest and pursue your dreams and what makes you happy, even if they don’t work out, because you never know when your time here on Earth will come to an end.
As summer wraps up, I am looking forward to apple season, pumpkin patches, and the chill at night slowly returning. I am enjoying my tomatoes ripening, and love to watch the summer sunsets with all of their pink, purple, and indescribeable beauty. I miss my cat that we lost this year, who always made a point of watching the sunsets until the sun went down from his perch high next to the roof. Whenever I see the sunset, I think of him and hope wherever he is, that he gets to continue seeing the sun go down every night.
